This error is caused when using an Access database and performing a large amount of transactions upon it at one time. You can learn more about it from Microsoft's Knowledge Base Topic.
To solve the issue (or, more correctly, work around the issue), you (or, more likely, your IT support person) needs to make a change to the Windows registry. The above article explains the change that needs to be made.
For most users, it is highly recommended you do NOT change the registry manually. You can easily make a mistake that will have repercussions you might never imagine (this remark is based on my own personal experiences doing this). Please contact the helpdesk if you have any questions.
Help! I have an Approved Course and AIM won't let me delete it!
AIM will not allow you to just delete an Approved course. What you need to do is Archive the Course. This will create an 'archive' file (similar to an export file) and then automatically delete the Course in question.
To archive a Course, just open the Archive/Unarchive Utility, highlight the Course, and choose Archive from the Options menu.
Note: You will need to be an AIM Administrator to perform an Archive.
Seriously, can someone explain bottlenecks to me?
NOTE: This applies to those entering CMS data using the classic/old CMS interface. If you're using the new Event-based CMS entry, none of this applies, as bottlenecks should be relatively straightforward.
Recording bottlenecks in AIM is not the most intuitive way of doing things. But it was how we were tasked to do it.
In my examples, I will be using Topic 2.1 from a Course. This topic consists of 2 lab periods listing a Student/Instructor ratio of 12:1. The two lab periods have a bottleneck of (3/1), indicating it will take two periods to perform the lab, but only 3 students at a time can work during those two periods, meaning we have 6 more bottleneck periods (we need three more sessions to get the rest of the 12 students through the lab, and each session is two periods - 3 times 2 = 6).
In order to record this in the CMS in order for the calculations on the MSSS to show correctly, you first need to enter in the standard periods (the first 2 labs) along with a bottleneck ratio of (3/1) in both periods. These are the 'standard periods'. Then, to show the bottleneck, you need to add 6 more periods of the lab. These will list NO bottleneck, as they represent the bottleneck periods. This will show 8 periods total for the lab, 2 standard and 6 bottleneck.
AIM takes all periods listed with bottleneck ratio information, and assumes those are the standard periods that would be used to teach that content if there was no bottleneck. So, for topic 2.1, it would say that 12:1 had two periods with a (3/1) ratio.
In order to get actual bottleneck periods to display, they need to add more lab periods for the topic, but with NO bottleneck information.
So, if the topic would normally take two periods, but, because there’s a (3:1) bottleneck, it will require an additional 6 periods to hold that lab (the math being 2 periods for each set of 3 students, so it would take 8 total periods to get all 12 students taught, so 6 more periods are needed for each additional set of 3 students).
This also gets the total number of periods that appear on the MSSS to match the total viewed on the CMS screen itself.
So, to sum up, remember the software seems backwards. The rows with bottleneck periods listed are not bottlenecks. The rows without are the bottlenecks.
On a side note, this is all being addressed with the CMS re-engineering that is part of a future AIM update, where bottleneck periods are calculated automatically.
When I select a PowerPoint file for an IMI/IMM, it says there's no slides!
This can be caused by one of two things (although both may also apply).
Update to the latest AIM software. Earlier versions of the AIM software did not include support for PowerPoint 2007 and beyond. This was fixed as an update within AIM v5.0.
Install Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). When installing Microsoft Office, Visual Basic for Applications is an optional component. Apparently, the way AIM communicates with PowerPoint requires VBA to be installed.
How do I connect my instance of AIM to CPM?
If you have a local instance of AIM and it doesn't connect to the correct EDE for CPM as it should, you may need to modify the AIM.INI file to point it there. So, open the AIM.INI file (found in your AIM v5.0 directory), and under the Environment section somewhere, add the following line:
Help! I can't close Word without being bombarded with messages about Normal.dot needing to be saved!
This is a common issue. The problem is everyone's setup is different, thus the solutions are different.
Here's some options to try:
Using Outlook? Maybe that's the problem!
Some users have reported that if you are running Microsoft Outlook and it is set up to use Microsoft Word as it's editor, these errors can occur. The obvious action is to turn off this feature (which would have the added benefit of making Outlook a tad snappier). Turning this off is quite easy.
In Outlook 2003 or earlier (Outlook 2007 apparently does not have this option), click the "Tools" menu and choose "Options".
Click on the Mail Format tab.
Uncheck the boxes near the top of the screen that say to use Microsoft Word to read or edit email messages.
Click "OK".
That's it. Test out TG and see if it works.
Have Office Live Add-In installed? Remove it!
The Office Live Add-In is a recent addition to the Office suite and has been seen to cause this issue. Currently, the best/only solution to this conflict is to uninstall the Microsoft Live Add-In for Office from your Add/Remove Programs control panel.
Check your other Add-ins
Many software programs apparently have created Add-ins for Word. For example, if you have Adobe Acrobat (not just the Reader) installed, you probably have the PDFMaker Add-in installed as well. While this Add-in is not known to cause issues, others have been seen to do so.
When printing from AIM using Word 2007, I get an error 4120: "Bad Parameter"
This is an odd problem, but has an easy fix.
Outside of AIM, open Word 2007.
Click the Office 'bubble' in the top left corner to open the Word menu.
Click the "Word Options" button on the bottom of the menu.
Highlight "Popular" on the left side of the Options screen.
In the section "Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office", make sure you have something entered in both the User Name and Initials fields.
Click "OK"
It should now work.
Every time I launch AIM, I am told I need to run the program as an Administrator.
This appears because AIM tries to perform some actions on initial start-up, and one or more of these actions are what require Administrative privilege. This will be addressed in a future release. In the mean time, you can skip the warnings if you launch the program AIMMain1.exe (or AIMMain2.exe) instead. Find this program under the Program Files\AIM folder, and create a shortcut to it on your desktop.
when i print out my course documents in lom, my numbering is all off?
This happens when you are printing a large amount of materials from the course level, or saving them out to .pdf.
Rather than printing the entire course document, first try it by module and see if that fixes the print issue. Sometimes, due to the sheer size of the data, it will overload the available memory and cause numbering mismatches.
If printing at the module has the same issues, again try it this time by lesson.
If the issues persists, try it at the section level.
If it continues to be an issue even at the section level, submit a trouble ticket to spawar.itchelpdesk@navy.mil.
I keep being asked for my PIN every 15 minutes. Make it stop!
This is known to occur when using the ActivIdentity software. It has a property to cache the PIN for a set period of time (the default is 15 minutes). After that time, the PIN is forgotten and the next validation with the certificate will require PIN entry.
To fix this situation, perform these steps (if you cannot perform these steps, ask your IT department or system administrator. If they won't change the setting, then you'll just have to live with it).
In Windows, open the Start Menu
Select All Programs
Select ActivIdentity
Click on the Advanced Configuration Manager program to open it.
When the Advanced Configuration Manager application opens, highlight PIN Caching Service on the left tree.
One of the options on the right-side of the screen reads Enable PIN caching. Make sure this value is Yes.
Another right-side option reads Number of minutes before PIN cache is cleared. The default is 15 minutes. Change this value to what you want.
Click Apply then OK.
If all steps were completed correctly, and if this procedure is even correct, then you should be prompted for your PIN less frequently than before
I am logged out from the server and it won't let me re-enter my PIN to log back in!
This is the nature of Internet Explorer and certificates. When you are logged out, your certificate is 'expired'. This prevents someone nefariously connecting back in without entering a PIN. There are a couple of solutions. You can close all open Internet Explorer windows. Once they are all closed, you should be able to return to the site and login.
Or you can try to clear your certificate cache.
In Internet Explorer, click on the Tools-Internet Options menu.
Select the Content tab.
Click the Clear SSL State button. You should see a confirmation message that your cache has been cleared.
Dismiss the message and close the Internet Options dialog.
You should not be able to log back in.
